Auto Safety Regulators Hope to Combat Distracted Driving Epidemic with “Driver Mode” for Cell Phones
Auto safety regulators are requesting that smart phone manufacturers create a “driver mode” for smart phones to help combat the rising number of motor vehicle fatalities and accidents caused by distracted driving.
The new proposed feature is modeled after “airplane mode,” which prevents a mobile device from sending or receiving communications while flying. “Driver mode” would restrict certain mobile apps and features from running while the user is behind the wheel.
This feature could help promote higher levels of concentration and awareness among drivers by giving them less incentive to reach for their phone. As we become increasingly more connected by our mobile devices, people are constantly tempted to use their phones while driving. By restricting certain apps from running while the user is driving, the power of distraction is taken away.

Recent NHTSA studies indicate that the rate of traffic fatalities has increased by 10.4% in the first half of 2016. More than 100 people die every day in traffic accidents. These statistics are troubling, and meaningful action must be taken to put an end to these tragic fatalities.
At Gauthier Amedee, we want to help ensure the safety and well being of all Louisiana residents. Please be alert at all times while driving, and keep these following guidelines in mind:
-Turn off or silence your mobile device and stow it out of reach: Keep your mobile device silent and out of sight. This will help reduce the temptation to check your messages, emails or social media while driving.
-Pull over: If you need to make an important call or look up directions, pull over to a safe area in a parking lot or on the side of the road.
-Prepare ahead of time: When traveling to a new location, put the destination address in your GPS device or cell phone before you start to drive.
-Use your friends. If traveling with passengers, have them make calls or respond to any text messages for you. If needed, you can also have them navigate the GPS for you.
These simple steps can help create a safer environment on Louisiana’s roads and highways.
