Baton Rouge Firefighter Booked for DWI After Victim Loses Leg

A firefighter with the Baton Rouge Fire Department was recently arrested on multiple counts following a November crash in which a victim lost her leg. An article on the incident and aftermath is available here.

The Details

According to authorities, the 33-year-old suspect was driving eastbound on Government Street in Baton Rouge on the evening of November 5th before driving into the oncoming lane. According to his arrest report, he then struck another vehicle head-on. The woman driving the other vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries in the collision. As a result of her wounds, surgeons were forced to amputate her leg.

The arrest report indicates the suspect had been traveling at a speed of 94 MPH before the crash. His Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) at the time of the incident was 0.21%—well above the 0.08% required for presumptive evidence of drunken driving in Louisiana.

A spokesman for the Baton Rouge Fire Department confirmed the suspect is employed by the department—noting the man was not on the job and was driving his personal vehicle at the time of the incident. He was booked into Parish Prison on several counts—including first-offense Driving While Impaired (DWI), reckless operation, speeding, driving on the wrong lane of a roadway, and first-degree vehicular negligent injuring.

An Unfortunate Trend

Drunk driving remains a significant problem in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 29 people in the U.S. lose their lives in alcohol-related vehicle collisions each day.
