“Louisiana’s Worst Flu Epidemic in Decades” – What You Need to Know to Ensure You Are Receiving Proper Treatment

This year’s flu season is here and is said to be the most widespread on record since health officials began keeping track 13 years ago. Unfortunately, many state officials are afraid the flu season has yet to reach its peak.

The flu strain doctors are seeing now is one that causes more severe illness, thus resulting in higher hospitalization rates and deaths. According to the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, Dr. Rebekah Gee, “In more severe seasons, the flu causes approximately 700 deaths and nearly 8,000 hospitalizations each year. In Louisiana we are already on track to meet and possibly exceed these statistics for the current flu season.”

In order to combat this epidemic, the state health department is offering free flu vaccines at more than 55 parish health units. The vaccines are available Jan. 31 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Clinic information is available on the health department website .

The flu is highly contagious therefore if you experience any flu-like symptoms, stay away from others.

Symptoms include:

• Fever
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Runny/stuffy nose
• Body aches
• Headache
• Chills
• Fatigue

Due to the influx of people entering doctors’ offices and hospitals across the country, patients can be misdiagnosed and therefore suffer serious illness or even death. It is important to be aware of flu symptoms to ensure you are getting the proper medical treatment needed.

If you begin to experience flu like symptoms, immediately seek medical attention. Flu like symptoms can appear suddenly and be misdiagnosed for a common cold.
