Bike Accident
Motorist Hits, Kills Woman on Bicycle

Police say a collision with a motor vehicle killed a young woman while she rode her bicycle in St. Mary Parish. An article on the incident appears here.

The Franklin Police Department responded to a report of an evening accident involving a motor vehicle and a bicycle. The incident occurred on eastbound at Frontage Road, close to LA-3211.

Officers arrived on the scene to discover 23-year-old Zaria Welcome had died of injuries sustained in the accident. Their investigation into the incident is currently still ongoing.

A Sad Truth

Unfortunately, statistics tell us nearly 45,000 cyclists are injured every year in the United States—and 5,400 of those injured are children. Many of these accidents ultimately prove fatal—claiming an estimated 800 lives annually.

Making Changes

In response to this dangerous trend, activists and politicians in some cities have proposed changes to infrastructure to improve bicyclist safety—including the creation of parking-protected bike lanes where a physical barrier separates the lane from automobile traffic.
