New Report Shows Louisiana is the 3rd Most Dangerous State for Pedestrians

According to a study by Smart Growth America, Louisiana was named the third most dangerous state in America for pedestrian safety, behind Florida and Alabama. Between 2005 and 2014, over 1,000 Louisiana residents lost their lives in pedestrian accidents.

If you walk your child to school, take morning jogs, or even just walk your dog at night, please remember to be aware of pedestrian safety and share with your loved ones. You cannot always trust motor vehicles to watch the right of way for pedestrians.

Next time you’re out walking, please keep these tips in mind, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention:

-Always Use Designated Cross-Ways. Always cross the street at the designated crosswalk. If there is a traffic light, make sure you are only crossing when permitted. If there’s no traffic light, look left, right and left before crossing.
-Increase Your Visibility. If walking at night, make sure you are visible to motorists, bicyclist and other pedestrians by carrying a flashlight and wearing retro-reflective clothing. Remember to stay visible to drivers and bikers at dusk and evening hours.
-Avoid Distraction. In order to be fully aware of your surroundings, put any electronic devices in your pockets, purse, or backpack and avoid wearing headphones in heavily populated areas. Do not cross the street with your head down, looking at your mobile device.

If you are walking with children, always hold their hands and let them know to look left, right, left, always before crossing the street. Let’s strive to make 2017 a happy, healthy and safe year for all Louisiana residents.
