Pedestrian Deaths are Rising in Louisiana Due to Distracted Drivers

Louisiana was named the third most dangerous state in the U.S. for pedestrians. Unfortunately, a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association shows a major increase in pedestrian traffic fatalities will increase in 2017.

So far there have been 28 pedestrian deaths in Louisiana.

The main cause – cell phones. As we see a heavier smartphone use nationwide among not only drivers but pedestrians we also see an increase in fatal interactions between the two. Cell phones pose a major distraction to both drivers and pedestrians.

We all need to remember these safety tips provided by the AAA exchange:

  • Be Visible – It is important to make sure you stay visible to drivers at all times and make eye contact with them as much as possible. Wear bright colored clothing, reflective gear, stay in well-lit areas when crossing the street.
  • Stay Alert – As we continue to use our cell phones, distractions are everywhere and become even more difficult to avoid. Put Your Phone Away when on the road, don’t wear headphones – this makes it almost impossible to hear oncoming traffic or alert signals.
  • Follow the Rules – Know the traffic rules and be sure to follow them at all times. Be aware of signs and signals when crossing roads, NEVER assume a driver will grant you the right away, always be aware of drivers.
  • Walk in Safe Places – Use crosswalks at all times when crossing the street and look both ways before crossing, stay on sidewalks whenever possible and if one is not available be sure to walk on the far side of the road facing traffic, always avoid walking along highways or other roadways where pedestrians are prohibited.

Pedestrian accidents caused by distracted drivers are preventable! As we enter into Spring and warmer weather, more pedestrians will be walking and jogging on the roads. Always remember to put your cell phones away when driving. And do not be on your cell when jogging or crossing the street. And always KEEP YOUR EYES OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS!
