Raising Awareness of Distracted Driving this April
Every day, distracted driving causes crashes that kill over nine people in the United States—and injure 100 others. April has been declared Distracted Driving Awareness Month by the National Safety Council (NSC). Distracted Driving Awareness Month is a chance for all of us to recognize the dangers of—and eliminate many preventable deaths caused by—distracted driving.
The Highway Loss Data Institute and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have recently released the results of a survey on distracted driving in the U.S. The results of the survey tell us cell phone use while driving has increased 57% percent over previous surveys.
Examining the Results
During 2017, research from IIHS indicates the manipulation of a cell phone played a part in over 800 traffic fatalities on U.S. roads. A roadside survey by IIHS indicated drivers were 57% more likely to manipulate a cellphone compared to drivers in a 2014 survey.
The total number of motorists seen manipulating cellphones increased from 2.3% in 2014 to 3.4% in 2018. At the same time, a 2018 nationwide survey from the Foundation for Traffic Safety, part of the American Automobile Association, found 64% of survey respondents report that distracted driving is a more serious problem than three years ago.
About 23% percent of drivers participated in at least one distracting activity beyond cell phone use. These activities included:
- Manipulating the Car’s Audio System
- Manipulating Climate-Control Systems
- Manipulating Electronic Devices
- Talking or Singing While Driving
- Operating Other Vehicle Systems
- Eating or Drinking While Driving
- Personal Grooming While Driving
- Reading Printed Materials
