Runaway Tractor-Trailer Tire Kills College Student

A tragic accident in which two large wheels broke free from a tractor-trailer has left a young New Orleans college student dead. An article outlining the incident appears here.

A Young Life Lost

The accident occurred at a rest area on eastbound Interstate 10 in Jackson County, Mississippi, just west of the Pascagoula River Bridge. The victim, a 21-year-old college student who attended Tulane University in New Orleans, was traveling with friends when the group stopped for a travel break. The local coroner’s report indicates the victim was originally from Forest Lake, Minnesota.

A Tragic Circumstance

A spokesperson from the Gautier, Mississippi Police Department said a dual-wheel assembly weighing approximately 1,000 pounds broke free from an 18-wheel truck traveling westbound on I-10. The wheels entered the rest stop on the south side of the road after rolling approximately 875 feet through the eastbound lanes. The victim was struck and killed while outside her vehicle.

The wheel assembly also struck the victim’s car, as well as another vehicle parked nearby. A witness provided investigators with video of the wheels crossing a grassy area before continuing approximately 150 feet down an embankment. The heavy wheels could not be lifted by multiple personnel and required a heavy-duty cable winch to recover from the scene.

The Investigation

Police interviewed the driver of the tractor-trailer, owned by Dana Transport of New Jersey. He realized that he had lost the wheels on I-10 after exiting the Pascagoula River Bridge and soon turned around. He stopped after seeing first responders present at the rest area. The driver was not detained by police.
