Seat Belts Still Vital to Driver Safety
By now, most drivers are aware of the dangers associated with drunk driving, distracted driving, or excessive speed. Sadly, one of the most-significant contributors to traffic fatalities is something many overlook. Seat belts save lives. An article outlining the severe risk unbuckled drivers face is available here.
According to Louisiana State Police, drivers who do not wear their seat belts are the number-one cause of fatal injuries on our roads. Our state has now fallen below the nationwide average in highway safety—simply because many motorists still forget to buckle up.
An Alarming Trend
In Louisiana, a motor vehicle crash happens every three minutes—with someone suffering serious injuries every seven minutes. Unfortunately, two people are killed in traffic accidents every day in the state. While most passenger car drivers still remember to wear their seat belts, usage is lower among pickup truck drivers and rear-seat passengers in all vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 37,461 people were killed in 2016 on American roads. Sadly, 48% of those killed were not wearing restraints.
For drivers and front passengers, seat belts reduce the risk of serious injury by 50%—and lower the chances of being killed by 45% overall. In 2016 alone, the NHTSA estimates seat belt use saved over 14,500 lives—and could have potentially saved 2,400 more. Still, one in seven people refuse to buckle up.
