Speeding Leads to Fatal Prairieville Collision

Police say a speeding vehicle caused a fatal multi-vehicle wreck in Prairieville which killed a 21-year-old woman from St. Amant. An article detailing the emerging story is available here.

Sources with the Louisiana State Police say a 17-year-old driver was speeding on northbound Airline Highway near LA-427 south of Old Perkins Road in Ascension Parish. At the time of the incident, the victim was in the passenger seat.

The Collision

The young driver lost control of his sedan, and went into a spin before colliding with a stopped pickup truck. The initial collision led to a chain reaction involving another pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle.

One Killed, Several Injured

According to another local news source, the woman was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge with critical injuries. She later succumbed to her injuries. The driver sustained serious injuries. All other parties involved sustained minor injuries. Everyone involved in the collision was properly restrained at the time.

While officers from Louisiana State Police Troop A do not suspect impairment played a role in the crash, toxicology samples were submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Charges are currently pending as the crash remains under investigation.

Reducing the Risk

In 2016, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated wearing seat belts saved approximately 15,000 lives. By their calculations, seat belts reduce the risk of serious injury to drivers and front passengers by 50%, and lower the chances of fatal injuries by 45%. Sadly, one in seven people still refuse to wear their seat belts.
