What Evidence to Gather After a Car Accident
Car accidents can be extremely scary, often leaving you with damage to your vehicle, with a strong possibility of injuries. That’s why it is so important to protect yourself by gathering the necessary evidence to prove your case against the individual responsible. Here is the most important evidence to gather after you have been in a car accident.
1. Police Report
After you have been in an accident it is important to call 9-1-1 and have the police come. When an officer arrives at the scene, they will prepare a report. This report is extremely helpful because it describes what occurred during the accident and can be used in an insurance claim or personal injury lawsuit to determine the circumstances of the case.
Once the scene of an accident has been cleared, valuable evidence is often lost. If you are in a safe place and are able to, it is important to take multiple pictures to capture everything possible. This includes pictures of the following:
- The scene of the accident
- The locations of all vehicles involved
- The license plates of all vehicles involved
- Any interior damage to any vehicle involved
- Any markings or debris created by the accident
- Any and all injuries
These pictures can be taken on your phone, or if you are unable to do so, you can ask a bystander to take them. When capturing the images be sure to shoot both close and wide, getting all angles. Keep in mind that it’s better to have more than enough photos than be missing a pertinent shot.
3. Contact Information of Witnesses and Other Drivers
You’ll also need to gather the contact information of witnesses and any drivers involved.
For the other drivers involved, obtain the following:
- License with their name and address
- Car registration
- Insurance card
If the driver commits a hit-and-run, do your best to obtain the license plate of the vehicle and call the police.
